Inauguration Day

"What do you think?" Daniel asked his husband as they sat on the sofa watching the inauguration of Henry Hayes as President of the United States.

"He'll do," Jack opined.

"Are you sure?"

"Danny, I haven't met the man and he doesn't know squat about the Stargate yet. I'm just going by my gut."

"But he chose Kinsey as his running mate."

"That is a puzzlement."

"I had a hard time voting for him because of that," Daniel admitted.

"You're not the only one," Jack groaned. "We have to hope Hayes can keep Kinsey in line, and heaven help this country if anything happens to incapacitate Hayes."

"Don't go there."

"Kinsey as vice president is scary enough," Jack put forth. "That's it," he commented as Hayes completed the oath of office.

"When do you think they'll tell him about the Stargate?"

"Tomorrow." Jack laughed, "Welcome to the Oval Office. By the way, ever heard of the Goa'uld?"

"That's, uh, quite a welcome."

"He'll get an earful, that's for sure."

"Do you think he can handle it?"

"He'd better, Danny, because if he's not up to the task, Kinsey will pounce, and then we'll be up the creek."

"I hope we're not ... not retiring for nothing," Daniel sighed.

The couple recently made the decision to retire from the SGC to finally live a more peaceful life together and maybe start a family. Their plans took a twist when Daniel was severely injured on what was to be their last mission with SG-1. After weeks of recovery, the younger man was finally well enough to go back to work, something they'd only decided to do the day before, after Sam made several entreaties to them and they'd had a conversation with General Hammond.

"We can change our minds."

"Again."

"Danny, it's our choice. If Hayes turns out to be a jerk, we can walk away. You know that."

"Yeah, but the Program is valuable, Jack. We don't need to be a part of it for it to succeed, but we do need it to continue."

"We'll stick around for a while, sniff out Hayes and see if he's worth his pay."

"You know what, Babe?"

"I know I love you."

With a smile, Daniel pledged, "I love you, too, so much, Jack."

After a few tender kisses, Jack asked, "You were going to say something."

"I was?" Daniel searched his mind and responded, "Oh, yeah, I was." He laughed and then stated, "Jack, it doesn't matter how President Hayes feels or what he does. This is about us and what we want for our ... children."

"Sounds nice to say, doesn't it?"

"Yes, and one day, Jack, I want to be able to look them in the eye and know we did all we could to make their world safe. We stay until we've done what we need to do."

"Even if it means fighting with Kinsey day in and day out?"

"If that's what we have to do, yes."

"Okay, Angel, but I think Hayes has some gumption. He may end up tossing Kinsey out on his butt himself.."

"Your gut is telling you that."

"It is."

Just then the older man's stomach rumbled.

"It's also saying something else, Babe."

Jack laughed, kissed his husband, and suggested, "How about a couple of hoagies before we take Bij and Katie on a walk to the park?"

"I'll help."

Happy and hungry, Jack and Daniel left the comfort of their sofa and clicked off the television. They'd seen all they cared to of the inauguration day proceedings. Now it was time to enjoy a good sandwich and move on with their day as they saw fit. By mutual agreement, they put aside any further discussion of the Stargate, politics, and the new President for the next few days. Instead, they would revel in their nation of two before reporting back to Stargate Command on Monday.

As Jack and Daniel relished their private time together in Colorado Springs, President Henry Hayes was informed by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Francis Maynard, of the Stargate Program on his first official day in office. Hayes was stunned, not just to learn about the missions to other planets, but that his VP, Robert Kinsey, already knew about the Stargate.

Kinsey was eager for the President to become aware of the Program and as soon as he could, he began plugging away to convince Hayes that more oversight was needed and that the Program was completely mismanaged. Privately, Kinsey was working with Robert Woolsey, now attached to the NID, who compiled a detail report that he felt would assure the incoming president that control of the Gate should be given to Kinsey.

Hayes had several meetings with Kinsey and Maynard, some of which included Woolsey, who reviewed several past events at Cheyenne Mountain, slanting the information to support Kinsey's view. The more Woolsey talked, the more adamantly he made his case. Though Maynard did his best to counteract each accusation, Hayes got an earful of data and opinion that suggested even SG-1 needed to be removed and placed in less decisive positions.

Near the end, Woolsey summarized his concerns about the flagship team, saying, "The members of SG-1 have similarly suspect priorities, and no wonder. Not one, but two people that Doctor Jackson had close, personal relations with were taken as Goa'uld hosts. Teal'c's family and associates among the ranks of the enemy Jaffa make him an easy target for Goa'uld retaliation and manipulation, and both Colonel O'Neill and Major Carter have demonstrated an alarming tendency to let interpersonal relationships cloud their decision making process."

At the end of a long day, Woolsey entered Kinsey's office. He was feeling defeated because Hayes seemed to be adhering more to the beliefs put forth by Maynard that favored retaining General Hammond in control of the Program and leaving SG-1 in tact as the flagship team. However, Kinsey was unconcerned and Woolsey suddenly became alarmed when the vice president indicated that even if Hayes didn't come around to his point of view, that "things happen" to alter a situation.

The next day, Maynard made another plea on behalf of keeping Hammond and SG-1. He spoke with the President about Anubis and the need to find the Lost City. He urged Hayes to let SG-1 "save this planet one more time."

Hayes mostly agreed, but felt like he had to give Kinsey something. There were more angles he needed to look at. He agreed Hammond and SG-1 had done an outstanding job, but noted they'd made enemies along the way and he wasn't sure he could protect them.

Elsewhere, Woolsey was feeling so much concern that he flew from Washington, D.C. to Colorado Springs to speak personally with General Hammond. There, Woolsey was straightforward in telling the general that he honestly believed what he'd reported to the President about Hammond and SG-1. However, he had great concerns that Kinsey was still tied into the rogue NID and that they were stronger than ever. He pleaded with Hammond to help him take Kinsey down and that he was sure Hammond had information he could use.

Hammond considered the man's words and the gave him a copy of the disk Jack and Harry Maybourne retrieved a few years earlier that proved Kinsey's transgressions NID connection.

Woolsey returned to the nation's capitol and met with Hayes in the evening when he gave the President the disk. Hayes wasn't surprised and surmised Kinsey's deal with the NID involved much more than money, but the power of having access to the Stargate.

When the meeting ended, Woolsey expressed the hope that history would record he tried to do the right thing.

The President countered, "Whose version of history, Mister Woolsey?"

Sunday night in Colorado Springs, Jack and Daniel stood on their roof deck and looked outward over their yard and into the vast skies beyond. It was cold out, but the sky was clear and the winds mild. Their beagles were inside, enjoying the warmth of their large beanbag bed.

Jack was behind his soulmate, his arms encircling the man who owned his heart. Daniel was relaxed in his lover's embrace and leaned his head back against Jack's shoulder.

"You ready for tomorrow?" Jack asked.

"As ready as I'll ever be. I just wonder ..."

"About?" Jack asked.

"The future."

"Bright and joyous," the silver-haired man promised.

"For us, yes."

"You were thinking about Hayes."

"Yes, but more to point, Kinsey. I just have a feeling, Jack, and it's not a good one."

"I have the same feeling, but I also know that SGC has been up against a whole lot of bad in the last seven years. We've always come out ahead, and I know we will again."

"Mister Negative is being Mister Positive?" Daniel mused.

"Danny, as long as I have you, I have only positive feelings about the world. To heck with Kinsey, let him try his best, he won't win."

"Are you sure?"

"Aren't you?"

Daniel smiled as he turned around and gazed into his Love's eyes. He felt safe in those eyes.

"Yes, I'm sure." Daniel took a breath which he caught before completing. He moved his hands to rub gently against Jack's chest. "I'm sure about something else, too."

"And that would be?"

"You and me, us, and the extension of us that will someday be. Kinsey can't stop that. Yes, Jack, somehow, no matter what happens, we'll find a way. We'll win because in the end, good outlasts evil."

"A cliché, My Love?"

"A fact, My Silver Fox."

"Daniel ..."

"Absolutely," the younger man agreed.

Uncertain about the future of the Stargate Program and not yet sure what kind of president Henry Hayes would turn out to be, Jack and Daniel left the cold of the night for the warmth of their bedroom. They concentrated on their love and their promise of a future that included more than just the two of them and their beloved dogs. Both men knew their future would be bright because they were in love, and together, they had a synergy that made them unbeatable. It wasn't about competition. It was always about the love, and they had plenty of that, on this night, and every night, whether in Colorado Springs or on a distant planet.
